Dreaming Big, It takes two.

Dream Big
Original Mixed Media by Harmony Lenasbunt 2012

Well, I just returned from the show in Chattanooga.  I am always amazed at the resiliency of my kiddos.  They took the 8 hour trip like champs and handled the busy show schedule with ease.  My now 5 month old spent the early mornings strapped to my front while I hung paintings and organized prints at the show tent, while my 4 year old busied himself with a "scene" of wooden birds he had stolen from my display and hid under one of the tables playing happily for hours.  The show was fun, with lots of great stories heard from various people visiting my booth, and new friends made from the amazing array of talented creatives that were vending beside me.  It was a terrible selling show, as we barely made back the cost of our space fee and our hotel bill, but I always love visiting Chattanooga, which made up for that fact.  My husband and I always call it the "city of wonders" because they always have some totally interesting or off the wall thing to explore around almost every corner in the downtown area, and we have had several family vacations there in the past.  This visit did not disappoint us in the slightest.  The weather, which had been promised to be awful (thunderstorms and constant rain), ended up being a mix of clouds, sun, and perfectly cool, a welcome respite for this heat wearied Floridian.  I was so blessed to also have the willing hands and companionship of my sister, her husband, my brother and his wife along for the weekend, so there was lots of help and plenty of time away from the booth to play with my boys and visit other venders and enjoy the art festival itself.  I actually really hate the selling part of shows, love setting up and seeing it all together and beautifully arranged, but when it comes down to watching people pick over what you created, it just feels odd and I want to be as far from the booth as possible during that part of the show.  I do love the stories though.  How a certain image or phrase sparked some memory for them or inspires a dream.  I love to encourage each person to keep reaching for that place of peace and happiness that they hope for, keep being creative, keep finding joy in little simple bits of life and letting it seep into their souls.  I hope my art can do that for a few people, and I send out my own gratitude to each person that took the time to look at my work and took a piece of it home with them.  You are inspiring my own dream, and so I thank you all.

Try It! A New Perspective in an Instant

The mommy-son team has been at it again.  Last night, right before bath time for my 3 year old, he asks me if we can color together.  Who am I to deny a creative inspiration moment for a silly thing like a bedtime routine?  So we pulled out a large piece of illustration board and my tray of soft pastels and had a glorious time!  Such a mess, such fun, I love those moments with him and am really aware that I have only 3 more months of just he and I before we add another set of tiny hands to our world.  When we finished and headed towards the tub, we had really started something interesting (it went way beyond pastel sticks at this point).  I had recently heard a tip for visualizing a piece differently by cropping into different areas and getting a new ideas from those details for a direction for the entire piece.  Since I had no real thought or idea for this work, I thought I would try it.
I am officially in love with this technique for seeing things differently.  I totally know where I want to go with this painting now.  Try this sometime.  Take something that you are working on and need inspiration for, photograph it, and then crop into different areas and blow the images up! Instant New Perspective!

FYI: Just a reminder that there are only 2 more days to enter my giveaway for 3 hand stitched hoops, and I'd love to get more people a chance to take these little cuties home.  Click on the button in the top right corner to enter.

The Perfect Book for A Love Story

One of the things that I love to do is make creativity journals for people.  Over the years I have amassed a ridiculous amount of random papers, plus I can help myself from picking up tons of vintage papers/books anytime I see the opportunity.  I find using an assortment of interesting papers as a canvas for thoughts, doodles, collages, or photos creates a really great jumping off point for the imagination. Every once in awhile, I get the honor to create a very special book for someone, and collaborate with them to find papers, colors, and textures that reflect their spirit and passions.
I've been working on such a wonderous book this past couple weeks, and it is now zooming away across the states to land in the hands of a very special soon-to-be-wedded couple.  The book will serve as a guest book of sorts at their upcoming fall wedding.  I adored working on it and was over the moon with how beautifully all the ideas came together.  I couldnt be more excited to share with you a few peeks at some of my favorite parts of what I created for them...
a love story from a vintage children's book
pages from fashion magazine paired with valentines doily
personal photos printed on fabric and hand embellished
 vintage wedding wrapping paper
fabric and paint makes such a yummy textured one of a kind cover
lots of interesting shapes, sizes, and colors paired throughout
hand embroidered photo of the couple and a love note
woodland creatures from old story book
recycled ribbons from old saris and hand dyed silk, so rich in color

I can't wait for their friends and family to fill the pages with love and well wishes for the couple's new life together.  What do you think?

*(If you are looking for a unique book to serve as a journal, photo album, gift, or anything else you can dream up, I'd love to create something special just for you.  Just send me a message that you want a custom journal and I can create a custom listing for you in my shop.  I also have pre-made creativity journals available in my Etsy Shop.)

Thanks for letting me share my latest creation with you!

From Inside My Art Journal

I had a bit of time this morning before I had to leave the house for my clinical group supervision (an experience just as exciting as it sounds, I promise).  So I decided to crack open the new sketch book I had purchased and do some exploration.  I used to be such an avid Art Journaler a while back, but kind of stopped when life got so chaotic with toddler play, 2nd pregnancy, final clinical for my counseling degree, you know life stuff.  I've been feeling really guilty about it, since I am such an advocate for sketching and journaling as a healthy life process.  So today, I picked it back up and it was really fun to create with no expectations.  To motivate myself, I am going to commit to showing you at least 2 pages from my journal every week.  Here's a bit of what I did today...

Here's what it did look like when I thought I was done...

But someone thought it was too clean and this pudgy little hand sneaked in...

I looked at the other page and saw this... kind of a Sabrina Ward Harrison sort of feel dont you think? So I kept going and here are the finished pages...

The words came from thinking about my son and the intense amount of joy he brings to my soul with his unconditional love.  Any other Art Journalers out there?  What are you working on right now?

Art School Drop Out

I cant even tell you how happy this painting makes me.  I havnt done a large size canvas painting in years.  Seriously, YEARS!  this was my medium - paint on large canvas.  I loved it, it fulfilled me to create such large pieces of art - all messy and chaotic up close, lovely and full of stories from afar.  But you see, I did those kinds of paintings when I was in art school. before husband, before baby, before grad school, before, before, before...   i believed in myself as a painter back then.  i believed in the possibilities of me - me as an artist, as an innovator, as a generator of unique and creative ideas to be transformed into paint, that people would just have to own and put in their private spaces, that would turn into a revolution of thought and...(just kidding, but i did really have a lot of art-esteem and wanted very much to be a selling artist).  Then I ran out of money and quit art school.  I took a "real" job in a healthcare clinic doing secretarial work, then met my husband to be, fell in love, and we moved to a new city to finish our academic degrees so we could get better paying jobs and buy a house.   I got pulled into an adult world of jobs, bills, mortgage, academic research, and then MARRIAGE.  I got into graduate school for mental health and marriage and family counseling and then had a baby and before I knew it, it had been 7 years since I had painted a thing and I felt like I had lost myself along the way.  There is a lot more to this journey that I am skipping, but it leads me to this painting and how nervous  i was looking at the blank 3'X4' palette and at the same time feeling so excited and terrified to start.  You see that moment before you start the painting that you havnt made yet can be anything.  It could be your greatest work to date or it could just remind you that you quit art school 7 years ago and need to stop pretending that you are an artist.  I was mostly worried about discovering the latter as I hovered over the stretcher working up the courage to start and find out what it would become.  I needed some inspiration to get started and so perused some of my favorite art blogs in search of a good idea to strike me.  I stumbled upon this done by Alisa Burke and I just had to create my own style and version of this idea.  It brought back memories of art school, after we would finish a piece and need to reuse the stretcher for our next assignment we would often remove the painted canvas and make bracelets, chain garlands, patches and other random things out of the painting (only the really bad ones we hated), but to create something beautiful and then tear it into pieces and use as individual artworks seemed intriguing.  You would never know what you were going to end up with until the very end when you tore it apart.  There was very little control over the end pieces and this felt perfect for where I was at in that moment.  And so I began, without reservation or stomach butterflies, I just began to paint.  I started with a layer of colors and then added a vintage fabric pattern on top with gel medium to create wrinkles and texture.  Then I grabbed my linoleum cut bird prints and started applying them to the surface in a random pattern.  It was so much fun and so free.  I didnt really have to worry about form and space in the large scale because it was going to be torn up in the end and so I could just have fun and fill spaces as I felt like it.  I added print stamps of musical notes and hearts. I put top hats on some of the birds and dangled stars above their heads and out of their beaks.  I painted little flowers and grew wave patterns around them.  Then I looked at it for awhile and it needed something more, more color, more chaos.  I grabbed my water soluble oil pastels and a big ole brush and started bringing the entire thing to life.  I LOVE what these little crayons can do when mixed with water and gesso.  Then I grabbed my chinese brush and india ink and started adding positive affirmations that I needed to hear, all starting with the words "Today I will..". Taking one more look at it and I could see that it was almost done.  Just one more thing.  I added blobs of speedball printing ink randomly around the birds then laying the canvas flat on the floor, I sprayed water over each blob until it was ready to run.  Then with no idea of what it would look like or do to overall piece, I turned upright and let it all run down and then dry.  AMAZINGNESS!
It made me clap and jump with glee.  I was exactly what I wanted to create, something beautiful, chaotic, and telling a story, my story.  After a day of two loving it and letting it just be, I surrendered it to its fate and tore it into squares in the 3 sizes of the Art Journals I make and sell.  Then more gel medium to mount them on the recycled cardboard covers, and I couldnt have been more excited about the result.  I have a little less doubt in myself now.  I am learning that I need to keep taking these risks to rediscover myself as an artist.  The next week I did another large painting and tore it into journal covers.  This time houses with windows full of secrets and windows into peoples souls.  You can see it here.  And keep an eye out on my etsy site for the Flock of Birds Journals (the ones that came from this first painting.  Thanks for believing in me!

The birds and the bees..

I just found out that two different etsy users have each chosen one of my items for a treasury that they put together.  For those of you who have never heard of such a thing, a treasury is a list of items that people put together of their favorite finds while searching through all the millions of etsy listings.  What this means is more people can more easily see my listing that was chosen and then could link to my etsy shop that way.  I know that it is kind of silly, but it was really exciting for me.  It feels special to be picked, especially twice in one week!  It also feels amazing to know that people are starting to respond to my artwork.  Like maybe I am not so crazy to try to make this artsy/crafty stuff that I love to do so much into a lifestyle/ and maybe eventually a self supporting business.  Here are links to the treasuries that I am in!
Check them out :) They are both super fun and they just compound my recently realized enjoyment of both bees and birds in artwork.
